Indigenous Leadership in Mining: The Vision Behind MDM Mining & Civil

Across Australia’s mining industry, Indigenous businesses are playing an increasingly important role in delivering major resource projects. MDM Mining & Civil represents a strong example of how Indigenous leadership can drive both economic opportunity and industry capability.

Founded by Mika McLennon, a Gidja man from the Turkey Creek region of the Kimberley, MDM was built on the belief that Indigenous owned businesses can deliver complex mining and civil projects while maintaining strong cultural values and community connections.

From its early beginnings as a small regional contractor, the business has grown rapidly into a trusted partner delivering work for major resource companies and government organisations. Today MDM provides specialised mining and civil services across regional Western Australia.

The company’s services cover the full lifecycle of mining projects, including access track construction, civil earthworks, drilling support, mine site rehabilitation, surveying services and mechanical maintenance.

One of the key factors that distinguishes MDM is the combination of technical capability and cultural understanding. Operating in regions where projects often intersect with Traditional Owner land, the company understands the importance of working respectfully on country and engaging with local communities.

Cultural awareness training, participation in traditional ceremonies and ongoing community engagement form an important part of the company’s operations. With many Indigenous employees and a director who is a Traditional Owner of land associated with the Argyle Diamond Mine area, the company views environmental and cultural considerations through the lens of land custodianship.

Another important focus of the business is creating employment pathways for Indigenous workers. By providing training opportunities, mentoring and career progression, MDM is helping build a skilled workforce across the Kimberley region.

In the past five years the company has trained and employed more than one hundred workers, with a significant proportion identifying as Aboriginal and many coming from regional communities.

These opportunities extend beyond individual projects. By developing skills in machine operation, surveying, civil construction and mechanical maintenance, workers are able to build long term careers within the mining and civil industries.

MDM also actively engages Indigenous owned suppliers and subcontractors wherever possible, strengthening the Indigenous business sector and ensuring that economic opportunities generated by mining projects flow back into regional communities.

Today MDM Mining & Civil continues to demonstrate that Indigenous owned companies can deliver projects to the highest industry standards while creating lasting benefits for local communities.
